An Effect of Aggregation on the Behavior of a Beetle (Conophthorus coniperda Sz) in a Temperature Gradient
نویسنده
چکیده
The white pine cone beetle (Conophthorus coniperda Sz., Scolytidae) infests the twigs and cones of white pine throughout its range in eastern North America. The insects pass the winter in the adult stage within abortive cones on the forest floor. In spring, the adults emerge and move to the tops of the trees where they infest the current cone crop. Eggs are deposited in the growing cones and the life history is completed within the brood cones during the period from early spring to midsummer.8 The only period in its life history when the insect is free-living and active is during the move from the abortive brood cones on the forest floor to the cones of the subsequent crop. This situation is particularly interesting in that the entire dispersive and distributional pattern of the insect must be established for each generation within a very short period. This report is concerned with a behavioral mechanism which is probably of considerable importance in determining the distribution of the insect.

Dose and enantiospecific responses of white pine cone beetles, Conophthorus coniperda, to alpha-Pinene in an eastern white pine seed orchard.
The white pine cone beetle, Conophthorus coniperda, exhibited dose and enantiospecific responses to alpha-pinene in stands of mature eastern white pine, Pinus strobus, in a seed orchard near Murphy, North Carolina, USA. (-)-alpha-Pinene significantly increased catches of cone beetles to traps baited with (+/-)-trans-pityol. (+)-alpha-Pinene did not increase catches of beetles to pityol-baited t...
متن کاملUsing a Temperature Gradient against the Time in Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis May Eliminate the Need for Stacking Gels
Background and Objectives: Making stacking gels for polyacrylamide gels in the laboratory by conventional methods is laborious and time consuming. Considering the role of temperature in polyacrylamide gels with respect to electrical resistance and viscosity, we assumed that decreasing the temperature would cause an increase in electrical resistance and viscosity. Ultimately, a downward tempera...

متن کاملThermo-Mechanical Vibration Analysis of FG Circular and Annular Nanoplate Based on the Visco-Pasternak Foundation
In this study, the vibration behavior of functional graded (FG) circular and annular nanoplate embedded in a Visco-Pasternak foundation and coupled with temperature change is studied. The effect of in-plane pre-load and temperature change are investigated on the vibration frequencies of FG circular and annular nanoplate. To obtain the vibration frequencies of the FG circular and annular nanopla...
متن کاملEffects of temperature gradient magnitude on bending angle in laser forming process of aluminium alloy sheets
Laser forming is a thermal forming process which uses laser beam irradiation to produce the desired final forms. In this article, the effect of temperature gradient across Al 6061-T6 aluminum sheets on bending angle is studied. Input parameters including laser power, scan velocity, beam diameter, and sheet thickness are the effective process parameters which influence the temperature gradient....
